AUTISTIC SPECTRUM DISORDER
Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition that affects communication, behavior, and social interaction. While autism can be diagnosed at any age, it is considered a developmental disorder because symptoms typically appear within the first two years of life.
According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), individuals with ASD may experience:
-
Challenges with communication and social interaction
-
Restricted interests and repetitive behaviors
-
Difficulties that impact daily functioning at school, work, or in other settings
ASD is referred to as a “spectrum” disorder because symptoms and their severity can vary widely. It affects people of all racial, ethnic, and economic backgrounds. While ASD can be a lifelong condition, early intervention, treatment, and supportive services can significantly improve a person’s ability to develop skills, manage challenges, and live a fulfilling life.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that all children be screened for autism, and caregivers are encouraged to discuss evaluations with their doctor if concerns arise.
